Regional newspaper publisher Newsquest Media Group and IT services

company ICL have teamed up to launch an ’e-tail’ website linking virtual

shopping malls around the country.

ShoppersWorld.co.uk will allow consumers anywhere in the world to order

local products from across the UK, from Wensleydale cheese to

handicrafts.

Each of the malls will be linked, allowing users to search for

particular items in categories such as gifts, homes and gardens,

clothing, food, business and motoring.

Newsquest’s 25-strong media sales team and online sales house Real Media

will sell advertising on the site, which is hosted and managed by

ICL.

Retailers can approach their local newspaper to get their shop

online.

Newsquest’s new-media division has been working with ICL since 1997,

when it launched the classified service ADHunter. This has since

rebranded as Fish4 and now carries classified ads from 80 per cent of

the UK’s regional press titles. ShoppersWorld will be linked to Fish4

and the This Is Britain portal, which is owned by a consortium of

newspaper groups that includes Newsquest.

Iain Aiken, chairman of Newsquest’s new-media division, said: ’Retailers

trust the name of their local newspaper for advertising and promotion.

The new initiative offers access to revenue streams previously

unavailable to them.

’Many small- and medium-sized retailers are unable to compete with the

huge sums of money spent by international e-commerce retailers.

Newsquest’s solution enables them to compete against these threats while

opening up whole new markets,’ he added.

Newsquest has a portfolio of 180 newspapers with a total circulation of

more than five million. It is owned by US newspaper group Gannett,

publishers of USA Today.

ShoppersWorld will initially cover Sussex, London and the Home Counties,

Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, the Midlands, Cheshire, Lancashire, the Lake

District, Yorkshire and the North East. The site goes live this month.
