His appointment marks a further strengthening of Rapp Media’s digital team following its appointment of Sharon Braude as its head of digital last year.
Although he will be based at Rapp Media, Gohil will work closely with its sister agencies on search strategy to ensure that clients’ creative content has the best possible audience.
He is likely to work closely with clients including Akzo Nobel and The Open University.
Gohil’s experience at Mindshare and, earlier in his career, at Razorfish has involved working on search activity for clients such as Unilever and Asda.
Ian Maynard, the managing director of Rapp Media, said: "Nik is joining us at a pivotal time as we start to further extend our SEO remit. It’s important that we have strong leadership and experience from strategy right through social and measurement.
"Nik is certainly the right person to lead these crucial areas of our growing business and we are delighted to have him on board."
Gohil said: "This is an exciting time to be joining a company like Rapp. With media, data, technology and creative expertise under one roof, it has an incredibly powerful position in the market right now.
"In terms of SEO, it means we can get involved right at the start of the client's online conversation, when content and website build decisions are being made."
