NTL follows AltaVista with free internet service

– NTL, the US cable communications company, has followed on the heels of yesterday's AltaVista announcement with plans for its own free internet service.

NTL's service, ntlworld, will be offered to customers in ntl's cable areas while those outside can transfer there telephone service from their existing supplier for £10 a month. The only catch then is that they must spend £10 a month on non-online calls.

NTL's will be first to market with a launched slated for six weeks time. AltaVista says its service will be ready in three months. However, the next few weeks is almost certain to see market announcements from a wave of competitors.

Barclay Knapp, NTL chief executive officer, said: "NTL has a vision to bring the internet to all UK homes – either via the PC, or the TV. ntlworld will help the UK in a drive to lead the world in marking ecommerce, e-entertainment and e-education available to everyone."
