Pearl & Dean ad segues from horror of war to humour of 'back of the head' actors

An actor who specialises in back-of-head acting explains the challenges of his craft and how much harder it is to act without the "cheats of facial expression", in an ad for cinema brand Pearl & Dean.

The three-minute film opens with a deceptively gritty scene of First World War trench warfare, with an apparent hero managing to avoid gunfire before stumbling across a corpse-strewn bomb crater. A red arrow suddenly appears superimposed onto the action, pointing at one of the victims (the actual ‘hero’ of the ad).

"That’s me," says a voiceover. "There. I do lot of corpse work. I’m Chad Jackson and I’m a back-of-the-head actor."

Chad goes on to explain the complexity and challenges of back of head acting. "We don’t have the usual cheats of facial expressions or words to fall back on," he says. "In many ways it’s the essence of acting."

He goes into some detail, demonstrating to viewers how he can play happy and sad just using the back of his head. He’s clearly a much respected player in his field and proudly shows us that he made the front cover of ‘Back Of Head’ magazine.

The ad, which is the first work by agency Brothers and Sisters since winning the account last month, breaks tomorrow (19 June) at cinemas during Hollywood film ‘Entourage’. It was directed by Ninian Doff, an ad and music video director, through production company Pulse.
