Perspective is the secret work weapon of Disney's Anna Hill

Anna Hill, the chief marketing officer at Disney UK and Ireland, explains why her healthy perspective is so important to her work.

I have always been the diplomat: trying to stop family arguments, ensuring my friends don’t fall out, explaining that I love both my kids the same. It has meant that I have built up a healthy perspective of what is important to me and what isn’t.

It doesn’t mean that I don’t get riled, argue or get frustrated. It’s just that if I ever do feel like this, I remind myself that "it doesn’t really matter – chill out".

Don’t get me wrong. I have lost perspective during some discussions I have had in the past, where I have fought for something I believe in so much that I became almost irrational (probably due to my second secret work weapon: passion).

But perspective does eventually sneak its way back in. I am a positive thinker. I have always believed that you only have one go at this life thing, so make it work, make it fun and don’t worry about the stuff that you cannot control. Have perspective.

This is helpful at work. One of the most common times I have had to use my secret work weapon is when I do a presentation. I always get nerves, and I have to listen to my inner voice that says "the audience want to hear you – they want you to do well". And I always try to see things from both sides – this is so important when one of my key roles is to work with partners to create great marketing.

The first place I start is: "So what would that brand want from this, why would they care, why does it work for them, how would I perceive this if I was them?"

It’s so easy just to sit in our shoes and see what we want to get out of it, but that’s only half the point. It also helps that I work for one of the most upbeat brands around.

We spend our day talking about positive things, entertaining people, getting kids active, improving family time… all the things that are important to me.

I am constantly putting myself into Disney fans’ shoes, and understand that their families are their most important assets. As is mine.
