Publicis appoints Tomblin to planning director post

Mark Tomblin, one of the founders of Maher Bird Associates, whose

Cold Eye creative agency ceased trading last month, has joined Publicis

as a planning director.

As one of a seven-strong team, he will specialise in the IT sector,

working on new business as well as assignments for existing clients.

Lucy Purdy, the Publicis executive planning director, said: "The IT

sector is an area Mark is passionate about and he fits in with our

strategy of looking for people with different approaches. Also, he has a

track record for doing excellent work for his clients."

Tomblin's partners at Cold Eye, Phillip Bird and Stuart Woodington,

joined BLM Media last month to launch Flint, the company's creative arm

(Campaign, 27 April).

Tomblin's industry career spans 20 years, beginning as a graduate

trainee at Benton & Bowles where he spent ten years as an account

handler. He later had spells at WCRS, Leagas Delaney and CDP.

After two years as a management consultant, he went on to found Maher

Bird but left in February 1997 after falling out with Stephen Maher, its

managing director.

After aborted talks about becoming involved in the establishment of

Circus, he helped set up Cold Eye with Phil Bird, another Maher Bird

founding partner.

The agency's client list included BBC Worldwide, Sony Music, the

Woolwich Building Society and the Tussaud's Group but it stopped trading

because, Tomblin said, "things weren't working out as we had hoped".

Of his new job, he said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to join an

agency that is really going places with a management team that

understands - unusually for a large agency - that consistently

remarkable work can only come out of a remarkable working environment."
