The radio industry has expressed surprise at the outcome of the

tender for the North-west radio licence, which was won last Thursday by

Boss FM, a consortium owned by BRH, a subsidiary of Border

Television.

The Boss bid defeated big names in the list of 21 applicants including

Capital Radio, Chrysalis Radio, DMG Radio, London News Radio and Granada

Television.

Boss FM is based on the format of Century Radio, owned by the same

company, and will broadcast a mix of 60 per cent music and 40 per cent

speech in peak time.

John Myers, the managing director of Century Radio, said: ’This is the

fourth regional station we have won. People who have listened to our

stations would not be surprised.’

But Sally Oldham, group managing director of Capital Radio, said: ’Our

concern is that the Radio Authority seems keen to allocate licences to

smaller stations, which may have little to bring in terms of growing

audience share against the BBC.’
