Rees gears up to head MindShare

MindShare, the J. Walter Thompson/Ogilvy & Mather media operation

due to launch at the end of next month, has confirmed the appointment of

TMD Carat’s Simon Rees as its managing director, as revealed in Campaign

(20 March).

Rees, the deputy managing director of TMD, was put on gardening leave

last week after handing in his resignation. It is as yet unclear when he

will be allowed to join MindShare, though his official notice period is

one year.

Mandy Pooler, the managing director of the Network who had been lined up

as MindShare’s managing director, has been promoted to chief executive

to make room for Rees.

Pooler said Rees had been the only candidate for the job. ’He’s a very

good people-manager and his negotiation skills are complementary to my

own background. It’s vital that we build a new culture for MindShare, so

Simon’s neutrality is also important.’

Beneath Rees, JWT’s media director, Mike Wood, will be MindShare’s

deputy managing director, while Bill Kinlay, the media director of O&M’s

Network, will become the commercial director.

At the same time, Pooler has created a new tier of management called

managing partners. Both Kinlay and Wood will take this title, as will

Kevin Razvi and Bill Barker from JWT and Darren Fawcett from the

Network.

All will retain their current client responsibilities.

Although Rees’s background is in TV buying, as managing director he will

work across all departments at the agency, which still has to find a

broadcast director to head its television buying division.

Across Europe, MindShare’s operations will be jointly headed by JWT’s

European executive media director, Ron de Pear, and the Network’s

European chief, Michael Quilty.

At TMD the broadcast development director, Dave King, has been promoted

to broadcast director, tak-ing over Rees’s television responsibilities.
