Hilton Hotels launches its first global branding drive in 30 years next

week, with a dollars 10 million press campaign by Bozell Worldwide that

recalls famous incidents at its hotels.



The ads use archive photographs of celebrities who made history in

Hilton hotels, including Nelson Mandela, John Lennon and Naomi Campbell,

and carry the endline: ’It happens at the Hilton.’ General release



Sainsbury’s has withdrawn a TV commercial starring John Cleese after

protests from the supermarket chain’s staff that the ad portrayed them

as gormless and stupid. The film, produced by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO,

The pounds 450 million takeover of the RAC by Cendant, the US owner of

the Green Flag roadside recovery business, has been referred to the

Monopolies and Mergers Commission. The move is a blow to the RAC Club’s

12,000 members who are each hoping for a pounds 35,000 windfall from the

deal. If the deal goes ahead, the RAC’s agency, M&C Saatchi, is expected

to take on the expanded advertising account in the UK. Independent



Chime Communications, which is advising BSkyB on the purchase of

Manchester United, more than doubled its pre-tax profits from pounds 1.7

million to pounds 4.03 million in the six months to 30 June, while

turnover doubled to pounds 38.4 million. The results were the first to

reflect the merger with HHCL & Partners last November. General

Cadbury is spending pounds 10 million on marketing its flagship Dairy

Milk bar with the aim of creating a ’megabrand’. A pounds 3 million TV

push, by TBWA GGT Simons Palmer, features a new line, ’Cadbury’s Dairy

Milk - chocolate and a half’, with three executions entitled ’journey

and a half’, ’day and a half’ and ’weepie and a half’. General

Virgin Radio has joined forces with the Times and the News of the World

in a pounds 2 million sponsorship deal which was put together by Carat.

During the week, the Times will sponsor Virgin’s daily sports bulletins

and at weekends, the News of the World will sponsor a new Saturday

afternoon programme, Rock’n’Roll Football, which combines music with

More Group plc has changed its name to Clear Channel International

following its takeover by Clear Channel in June. CCI will continue to be

based at the More Group headquarters in Golden Square and the name and

structure of the More Group’s outdoor advertising business around the

world will remain as they are. General release



British Airways is attempting to show that it understands the individual

needs of passengers with a global TV and print campaign through M&C

Saatchi which launches on Sunday. One of the spots highlights how BA’s

telephone check-in enables customers to spend more time at home with

their families while the other illustrates the skills and care needed to

serve passengers in the air. General release



Publicis announced a 54 per cent rise in first-half net profits to FF229

million this week, indicating the success of its aggressive

international expansion policy. The news was accompanied by a 6.7 per

cent rise in share price for the French advertising company, which

expanded operations to South America and Asia as well as winning global

accounts from Club Med, UBS and Hewlett-Packard. General release.
