Cable & Wireless Communications’ brand director, John Aarons, is leaving

the company amid heightened speculation that CWC is to be merged with

the rival cable operation, Telewest. Aaron leaves on 14 June without a

Barclays Bank has unveiled its first image makeover in 30 years. A new

logo, featuring the trademark eagle inside a globe, will accompany a

change in the shade of blue used in the bank’s livery. The new identity,

created by Interbrand Newell & Sorrell, comes amid a review of the

bank’s advertising arrangements in the UK. The Independent



Vernons has pulled the plug on its National Lottery tie-up, Vernons Easy

Play, after just eight months. BMP DDB and its sister media operation,

BMP OMD, were appointed to handle the pounds 13 million full-service

account for Vernon’s Easy Play in January 1998. General release



Richard Branson’s Virgin Group is planning to enter the telecoms market

and is close to striking a deal with at least two joint-venture partners

within the next month. The operation is likely to be called Virgin

Warburg Pincus, which wants to sell its stake in Channel 5, has valued

it at pounds 135 million. Likely bidders for the 18 per cent stake

include United News & Media and BSkyB. The Sunday Express



The Independent Television Commission has issued a joint consultation

document with the telecoms watchdog, Oftel, on the bundling of

television and telephony services by cable operators. Two alleged

practices are being investigated to see if they are anti-competitive:

refusal to supply either television or telephony separately, and

offering either service at less than the costs directly attributable to

VirginNet has issued a writ against a Surrey businessman in what could

become a legal test case for the practice of junk e-mailing on the

internet.



VirginNet is suing for breach of contract and trespass after the man

sent out more than 250,000 junk e-mails using a Virgin account.

Bertelsmann is top of the Zenith Media top 50 European media owners

list, compiled annually by the media agency on the basis of

media-related revenues. BSkyB topped the return-on-assets table, while

M&C Saatchi has poached Lisa Thomas, the deputy managing director of

Craik Jones, to be the chief executive of its new direct marketing

arm.

organisation. The prize will be presented at the Clio Festival in New
