Procter & Gamble will launch interactive advertising campaigns on UK

digital TV through a new unit set up by its roster agency, Grey. The

division, Grey Interactive, will advise advertisers on digital TV and

its interactive possibilities. - Marketing Week



Barclays is reported to be considering slashing its 300-strong marketing

department by up to two-thirds as part of a radical internal overhaul

inspired by a report by the management consultancy, McKinsey. A Barclays

spokesperson said it was too early to talk about numbers. -

Bass Breweries is understood to have opened talks to buy Allied Domecq’s

stake in the Britvic soft drinks empire. Bass is already the largest

shareholder in Britvic. Allied and Whitbread own 25 per cent each of a

company called Britannia, which owns 90 per cent of Britvic. The other

10 per cent is owned by PepsiCo. - The Guardian



Asda is putting pounds 1 million worth of big-name perfumes on sale at

discounts of up to half price in a Valentine’s Day promotion which

continues its fight against alleged price-fixing by designer

manufacturers. The retailer will be discounting brands including Dolce &

Gabbana, Opium, Ckbe, Armani and Jazz. - The Sunday Times



The first commercial ’aimed at cats’ aired on Wednesday during the ad

break of Coronation Street featuring a series of sounds and images which

are said to have feline appeal. The 40-second spot for Whiskas was

created by M&C Saatchi. - The Sun



Volvo will sponsor the new series of the hospital drama, ER, when it

starts on 4 February on Channel 4. The deal has been negotiated and

planned by New PHD and Drum PHD, with creative idents by Abbott Mead

Vickers BBDO. - General release



NTL, the UK cable, telecoms and internet company, has shortlisted

McCann-Erickson, J. Walter Thompson, Banks Hoggins O’Shea/FCB and Arc to

pitch for its advertising account. The pitches will take place on

The Carphone Warehouse is to review Tandy’s advertising after acquiring

the high street electrical retailer this week. Tandy spent pounds 3

million through Young & Rubicam last year, but will now receive more

Court Burkitt has scooped the creative account for River Island, the

high street fashion retailer. The agency won the business after a

three-way pitch, headed by the River Island managing director, Clive

Bates Worldwide has won the pounds 15 million pan-European account for

the American/Dutch business software giant, Baan. The market leader in

software to counter the millennium bug, Baan is



understood to be embarking on an international marketing offensive and

the advertising budget could be increased should the campaign roll out
