Glaxo Wellcome is courting the US drug company, Bristol Myers Squibb, in

preparation for what could be the world’s biggest merger. The proposed

company, which would be called Glaxo Bristol Myers, would have a

combined market valuation of pounds 140 billion and sales of pounds 12

Hitachi has created a video recorder which skips past ads when it

replays TV programmes. The recorder is the first in the UK to have a

commercial advance chip which automatically senses commercial breaks on

The Body Shop and the entertainer, Ben Elton, are to help launch a fair

trade chocolate bar brand. Divine is manufactured by a company called

Day Chocolate, which is part-owned by the Ghanaian farmers whose cocoa

to sponsor the world heavyweight title rematch in September between

James Bond’s gadget wizard, Q, is to star in a campaign for Johnson &

Johnson’s Reach Powerbrush. The ad, create by McCann-Erickson, shows the

actor, Desmond Lewellyn, talking to himself in his bathroom as he

contemplates his latest toy. The ad ends with the famous Q quote: ’Don’t

Mirror Group has poached David Clark, chief executive of VirginNet, to

be managing director of its new media services. The Sunday Telegraph

Scottish Media Group has expanded its outdoor advertising operations

with the acquisition of the privately owned Scottish outdoor company,

Baillie Advertising and Baillie Lite. Edinburgh-based Baillie, which has

357 48-sheet sites and 367 six-sheet sites across Scotland, will be

integrated into SMG’s outdoor advertising arm. General release

One2One is to be floated on the stock market or sold to another company

by its joint owners, Cable & Wireless and MediaOne. It is thought the

sale would value One2One, Britain’s largest mobile-phone operation, at

up to pounds 11 billion. General release

Renault and Nissan have merged to become the world’s fourth-largest car

maker in a deal worth pounds 3.3 billion. Renault has bought a

controlling stake in the Japanese firm and expects the merged company to

save pounds 2 billion in costs by the year 2000. A review of the two

companies’ advertising and marketing requirements is expected. General
