Safeway kids hit by strike action

- The boycott of UK commercials making by Equity, the actors' union, has hit the latest Safeway TV campaign.

- The boycott of UK commercials making by Equity, the actors' union, has hit the latest Safeway TV campaign.

New advertising for the supermarket chain through Bates Dorland features new children, instead of the familiar Molly and Joe characters, together with voice-overs by Cilla Black and Jeremy Clarkson.

The agency said the campaign would have been changed despite the Equity dispute, but admitted that the confrontation had prevented it signing the voice-over artists it wanted.

Graham Hinton, the Bates Dorland chairman, is also president of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising which has been taking a hard-line stance against Equity.

Safeway said that although future commercials would feature a variety of celebrity voice-overs, Molly and Joe would not be dropped.
