Sanyo in talks with agencies over Euro expansion strategy

Sanyo, the electrical products manufacturer, is looking at an expansion of its European presence.

It is talking to creative agencies about holding a pitch for an above-the-line campaign.

Sanyo is also talking to UK agencies about its expansion strategy.

There is no retained above-the-line agency, with Sanyo appointing shops on a project basis. A national press drive, by Bell Communications to launch a digital camera, breaks this month.

Frontline Media handles Sanyo's UK media business. It is understood that this relationship is not affected by the review.

A Sanyo UK spokesman said: "The activity is being led out of Japan and is to do with Sanyo's move into new markets." However, he would not confirm if the move would relate to specific products or reveal on which markets spend would focus.

The UK arm of the Japan-based consumer electronics giant sells a range of audio and visual appliances, including plasma televisions, portable radio and tape players, DVD players, video recorders and vacuum cleaners.

Until 1998, the UK account was held by the now-defunct Leagas Shafron Davis, which created advertising using the strapline: "Sanyo. What the world's coming to."
