Scotsman slashes cover price with relaunch

- The Scotsman newspaper, owned by the Barclay brothers, has cut its 45p cover price by more than half to 20p.

The revamp is designed to broaden the paper's readership beyond its Edinburgh heartland and reverse declining sales figures. Its sales have recently slipped by six per cent to 75,000.

However, a spokesman for the paper said circulation had already been rising in advance of the relaunch and that the next audited figures would show sales figures nearer 80,000

The paper has introduced a redesigned broadsheet and a tabloid lifestyle second section, tagged TS2.

It's main rival, The Herald has sales of around 100,000 and is thought to be unlikely to cut its price in response. The Scotsman faces increased competition from English Newspapers including The Times and the Telegraph, which have both launched Scottish versions of their papers.
