Shearer makes fun of Cantona in latest McDonald’s TV spot

McDonald’s has produced a parody of Eric Cantona’s ads for

Eurostar, replacing the philosophising Frenchman with the England

striker, Alan Shearer, who offers some observations of his own.

The ad, by Leo Burnett, aims to capitalise on World Cup fever as the

tournament opens in France next week.

To achieve authenticity, Burnetts used the crew, extras and editor of

the Eurostar spot for the McDonald’s ad. Shearer delivers a monologue as

he wonders if he will be able to get his hands on a Big Mac in

France.

The ad, which breaks on 9 June, ends with Shearer accepting that he

cannot pinch the Big Mac a Scottish fan is eating behind him.

Eurostar gave its full consent to the spoof, and even paid pounds 1 to

its agency, St Luke’s, for the copyright to the original commercial.

The McDonald’s ad was directed by Theo Delaney through Tomboy Films.

Ross Jameson wrote the spot for Burnetts and the art director was Jamie

Berger. Media planning and buying for McDonald’s is also handled by

Burnetts.
