McDonald’s has produced a parody of Eric Cantona’s ads for
Eurostar, replacing the philosophising Frenchman with the England
striker, Alan Shearer, who offers some observations of his own.
The ad, by Leo Burnett, aims to capitalise on World Cup fever as the
tournament opens in France next week.
To achieve authenticity, Burnetts used the crew, extras and editor of
the Eurostar spot for the McDonald’s ad. Shearer delivers a monologue as
he wonders if he will be able to get his hands on a Big Mac in
The ad, which breaks on 9 June, ends with Shearer accepting that he
cannot pinch the Big Mac a Scottish fan is eating behind him.
Eurostar gave its full consent to the spoof, and even paid pounds 1 to
its agency, St Luke’s, for the copyright to the original commercial.
The McDonald’s ad was directed by Theo Delaney through Tomboy Films.
