Skippy to front Rolo Cookies spot from J. Walter Thompson

J. Walter Thompson has resurrected Skippy, the kangaroo star of the 70s Australian children’s programme, to launch Rolo Cookies, a new variation on the Nestle brand.

J. Walter Thompson has resurrected Skippy, the kangaroo star of the

70s Australian children’s programme, to launch Rolo Cookies, a new

variation on the Nestle brand.



The campaign for the product, which has a biscuit ball at the centre of

the usual combination of chocolate and caramel, presents a twist to the

familiar question: ’Do you love anyone enough to give them your last

Rolo?’



Set in Skippy’s familiar home territory - the Australian bush - the ad

tells the tale of two friends feuding over the last Rolo.



It opens on Skippy coming across his two pals, Mark and Sonny. Sonny

greets Skippy warmly and, cupping his last Rolo Cookie in his hand,

offers it ’to the best mate a boy could ever have’. He then presents the

Rolo to his brother, Mark - and a somewhat miffed Skippy displays his

indignation by making his familiar clicking noise.



Some time later, Skippy bounds up to another of his chums, the head

ranger, who listens to Skippy’s clicking and is shocked to learn that

someone has pushed Mark and Sonny down an old mineshaft. ’Who could have

done that?’ the ranger gasps. Skippy clears his throat and looks very

guilty.



Chris Palmer directed the spot through Gorgeous Enterprises. It was shot

in Australia’s Ku-ring-gai National Park, adjacent to the location of

the original Skippy series. The kangaroo used in the shoot played the

same role in the 90s remake, The New Adventures of Skippy.



The ad was written by Trevor de Silva and art directed by Paul

White.
