Sky Sports has overtaken BBC1 to become the nation’s favourite

sports TV channel, according to the latest research from CIA MediaLab’s

Sensor survey.

Almost a third of adults now feel that the Sky Sports channels provide

the best sports coverage on UK television, up from 28 per cent in 1996,

when Sensor last asked the question.

The Sensor survey covers a representative sample of people over 15 years

old, with or without cable and satellite television. The current sweep

of research found that BBC1 fell from the top slot last year - when 40

per cent of respondents voted it the best channel for sports - to 30 per

cent this year.

ITV, however, has gained ground over its rivals, with new events such as

Formula One racing helping to propel the channel from fifth to third

position, with 11 per cent of those questioned agreeing that it provided

the best sports coverage.

However, Sky Sports’ hold has proved to be particularly strong among

younger viewers, with nearly half of those aged 15-24 favouring the

Sky-branded channels. Some 20 per cent of homes without cable or

satellite TV still voted Sky’s sports coverage top.
