Sportal has become the first sports-based internet company to sign

a major Formula One sponsorship deal by linking up with the Benetton

team.

The two-year deal, for an undisclosed sum, puts the Sportal logo near

the cockpits of the Mild Seven Benetton Playlife 200 cars, driven by

Giancarlo Fisichella and Alexander Wurz.

In a separate, five-year contract, Sportal has created a team website

for Benetton - www.benettonf1.com - that went live on 10 March.

The site does not currently carry ads but plans to do so soon, said

Sportal’s marketing manager Mario Tilney-Bassett.

There are also plans to launch an Italian version of the website.

Independently, Sportal is looking to develop a general Formula One

channel with content in English, German and Italian.

Sales will be handled by Sportal, which is aiming to expand its inhouse

team.

’We always have room for people who are sharp, creative, who understand

sport and have a proven record in media and sports sponsorship,’

Tilney-Bassett said.
