Sun launches free internet service to readers

The Sun's service, dubbed Currantbun.com, is the latest big entrant into the free internet access market. The market has exploded in recent months, following the launch of electrical retailer Dixon's Freeserve offering in September last year.

The Sun, which is 30 years old this year, is promoting its service today with 12-page pull-out that invites readers to call a freephone number to receive their free CD-ROM to set up their currantbun - the longtime nick name for the Sun newspaper - internet service.

In addition to free internet access, the Sun is offering free email, exclusive access to the Sun online and free web space for readers to create their own internet sites.

The Sun has previously been offered as part of the internet access subscription service LineOne, which was one-third-owned by the Sun's parent company, News International.

News International pulled out of LineOne, which is now also free to access, last week ahead of the launch of currantbun.com, leaving remaining partners BT and United News & Media to go it alone.

The Sun has teamed up with a number of online partners, including the search engine Lycos, online music store iMVS and Emap Online for its travel services and its ticket booking service, aloud.com.

The 12-page supplement offers a step-by-step guide to getting online, special deals on cheap PCs and a guide to surfing the net and online jargon.
