Tesco has parted ways with its in-store restaurant and cafe boss Michael Holmes, as the beleaguered supermarket group continues to strip back its business to its core retail offering.

According to reports, Holmes, who is chief executive of new food experiences, is part of a cull affecting up to 10,000 staff, a round of job cuts that follows various reorganisations of Tesco’s marketing department.

Holmes joined Tesco in 2006 as group corporate finance director, and was made chief of new food experiences in 2012, the year before Tesco acquired cafe chain Giraffe for nearly £50m.

Holmes was in charge of Giraffe, coffee shop Harris + Hoole, Euphorium bakeries and in-store restaurant Decks.

The group’s in-store restaurant ambitions were part of former chief executive officer Philip Clarke’s failed attempts to drive customers to Tesco’s bigger stores.

The news comes as Dave Lewis, Tesco's chief executive, instigates dramatic changes at the group to streamline the business and turn around its ailing financial performance, including closing the Cheshunt head office and divesting various non-core part of the business, including the sale of Blinkbox to Talk Talk.
