Tesla will charge British customers £1,000 to pre-order its mass-market Model 3

Electric car pioneer Tesla has revealed it will charge a £1,000 fee for Britons to reserve its as yet unready Model 3, which is expected to enter production in late 2017 and cost in the region of £35,000.

The company will start taking reservations on 31 March, the same day it is planning to stage a special unveiling event for its most mass-market model yet.

It said that making a reservation in its stores, of which there are 13 in England and one in Scotland, would give people "a better spot" in the queue than reserving online, while it would give higher priority to people who have previously bought a Tesla.

Reservations can be made in store from 31 March but cannot be made online until the live unveiling starts, at 8.30pm in California and 4.30am on 1 April in the UK.

UK customers will also have longer to wait for their cars to be produced. Tesla stated in a blog post today that deliveries would start on the US West Coast and move east, then start in Europe, Asia Pacific and right-hand drive markets.

UK customers are yet to receive Tesla’s next most recent car, the Model X sports utility vehicle, which was subject to a reservation fee of £4,000.
