- Daniel Kleinman, one of the UK's top directors, has set up a new production company in partnership with Bertie Miller, the former joint managing director of Rose Hackney Barber.

The new company, called Spectre, signals the end of Limelight, the 20 year-old production company that housed Kleinman and his fellow director John Lloyd. Lloyd will now join Spectre's roster along with Sandra Goldbacher from Rose Hackney Barber and Jason Smith from Produktion.

Produktion is also closing down and its managing director, Lewis More O'Farrell, will produce for Jason Smith at Spectre.

Steve Barron, the managing director of Limelight, said: "We have been thinking about closing the company for some time. In its glory years, it was an enormous company with tons of directors and hundreds of awards, but it was not profitable. Four years ago, we were one of the top three production companies in Europe, but we always carried a massive overhead."

Limelight will be wound down gradually, as both Lloyd and Kleinman are currently shooting commercials through the company. Spectre will move into its premises in London W1. Barron, also a director, is finishing a US project featuring Sam Neale and Isabella Rosselini. "I love Daniel and I hope to work with him again on some level," he added.

Bertie Miller left Rose Hackney Barber last November, just over two years after he was made joint managing director. "Rose Hackney did not need two of us doing it," he said. "I had made changes to the line up and gone as far as I was going to go. After 15 years of solid work it was time to make a clean break and have a few months alone."

Miller and Kleinman were introduced last December and decided at the beginning of 1998 that they would start up together. "Spectre is aiming at the Gorgeous, Godman, Blink, Pink end of the market. We are not an apologetic new production company," Miller said.

Kleinman's recent credits include VW Passat for BMP DDB and Batchelor's Supernoodles for Mother -- both of which won prizes at last week's British Television Advertising Awards. He also directed Bartle Bogle Hegarty's spoof Pirelli ad for Boddington's, and was behind the Jack Dee John Smith's bitter campaign for GGT.
