- The shape of news coverage on UK TV is set for a wide scale revamp from next week as both ITV and Channel 5 reposition their news bulletins, while Sky and the BBC overhaul their news formats.
From Monday 8 March, ITV's News At Ten is being replaced by ITV Evening News at 6.30 and ITV Nightly News at 11pm. Meanwhile, Sky News will launch a new-look 10pm news bulletin called Sky News at Ten.
Both launches will be backed by new ad campaigns. Sky News is taking strip ads in the terrestrial TV listings pages of the national press, with creative work by St Luke's and media buying by Universal McCann.
ITV is also running a major promotional push, both for the new news bulletins -- with creative work by HHCL & Partners and media buying by Motive -- and for the new peak-time schedule. Scottish Amicable has signed up as the first sponsor to take advantage of the new-look 10pm slot, sponsoring new ITV drama Wonderful You in a £750,000 deal.
On Monday 15 March, Channel 5's news will shift from 7pm to 6pm. Channel 5 was given the green light to reschedule its bulletin from the Independent Television Commission last week. The channel had originally requested a 5.30pm slot (Campaign, last week), which was rejected by the ITC.
The 6pm 5 News will include more live reporting, while the channel's hourly news updates are being extended. The freed-up 7pm slot will be used to run more general entertainment aimed at a younger audience.
On Monday 10 May, the BBC is revamping its 6pm news bulletin with a more informal style and a regular anchorman, Huw Edwards.
