Union opens in Leeds for English business

The Scottish agency The Union is opening an office in Leeds in a bid to capture some of the English advertising market.

The agency is hiring Poulter Partners' head of advertising, Clive

Goldstein, to be the managing director of the Leeds office when it opens

in September. The agency's new creative director is Paul McManus. He

joins from TBWA in Amsterdam, where as the creative director he handled the creative account for Canon.

The Union Leeds will deal with advertising, design, direct marketing and

e-commerce. Ian McAteer, the managing director of the Edinburgh arm,

will become chairman, although he will remain in Edinburgh. McAteer said the agency, which handles accounts for Intelligent Finance and ScotRail, had been considering how to grab a share of the English market.

"We believe we have a unique blend of creativity and teamwork," McAteer added. "This move is ahead of our original schedule, but we're confident Clive and Paul have the entrepreneurial spirit to make this work."

Goldstein started his career at DDB, moving to the Saatchi &

Saatchi-owned Edinburgh agency Hall Advertising. He became a group

account director at The Leith Agency before moving to Poulters in

1996.

Goldstein said: "This is an unmissable opportunity to lead a heavyweight

creative start-up, with the immediate support of an award-winning

agency."

McManus added: "I joined the Union because it has shown that you don't

have to go to London to get great creative. This will be a national

agency, based in Leeds, so our clients will get the best strategic and

creative thinking without the inconvenience and cost of travelling

south."
