- Adrian Vickers, one of the founding partners of Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, Britain's biggest agency, is being drafted in to lead preparations for the millennium world advertising congress in London.
As president of the UK chapter of the International Advertising Association, he will help attract extra sponsorship money needed to stage the three-day event as well as restoring some balance in the IAA's UK membership, which is media dominated.
Vickers has the advantage of being one of the country's most well-known admen with regular access to leading international advertisers via his agency's link with the BBDO global network.
His presidency, due to be confirmed at the chapter's annual meeting on 19 January, will be for a two year term which will extend beyond the congress in June 2000.
The conference initiative had been expected to be fronted by Rupert Howell, who played a leading role in its promotional video. But the HHCL & Partners chairman was unable to combine it with his upcoming presidency of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising.
Vickers, with previous links to the IAA, declined to discuss detailed plans before his nomination was approved. But he denied the completion of the BBDO take-over had led to an increased involvement in industry affairs -- he has already been nominated as the IPA's next honorary secretary.
"To some extent the IAA presidency will be what I choose to make of it," he said. "But I haven't gone into this without speaking to a lot of people. The congress is going to be very prestigious event for the UK chapter."
