- Virgin has appointed consultant Chris Locke as group internet manager, making him responsible for the development of the Virgin.com site and Virgin's extranet.

In addition, he will act in an advisory capacity to assist the development of websites throughout the Virgin Group. He will based at Virgin Net and will report directly to Gordon McCallum, group strategy director of Virgin.

McCallum said, "We are extremely pleased to have Chris on board. Virgin.com and the Virgin extranet are key elements of our online strategy. Chris's involvement in their development, in addition to providing assistance for other Virgin group websites, will ensure each one matches the exceptional level of customer service and quality the brand enjoys off-line."

Virgin intends to bring together all the Virgin companies' websites under a Virgin.com umbrella and provide a central point for people to go to find out everything they want to know about Virgin.

Amongst other things it will feature Virgin's corporate history, company profiles, links to other Virgin sites, news, information and an online diary detailing what Richard Branson has been up to during the current month.

However, the key strategy behind the site is the dynamic press centre. This will allow users to view and download news releases from a group-wide database and access the Virgin image database.
