The Week: Brand news - EBay rocked by £30m fine

EBay has been fined EUR38.6 million (£30.6 million) in a French court after 90 per cent of the LVMH-branded items listed on the online auction site were found to be fakes.

LVMH, which owns brands including Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior, said the verdict represented an important step in the protection of brands and designs against parasitic practices. But eBay, which plans to appeal, countered by accusing the company of attempting "to protect uncompetitive commercial practices at the expense of consumer choice" by trying to stop people selling its goods at cheaper prices.
