The Week: Media news - BBC local plans rejected

The BBC Trust has rejected the BBC's plans for a £68 million nationwide network of local online news services.

The Trust has refused permission on the grounds that it would not improve services for the public enough to justify either the investment of licence-fee funds or the negative impact on commercial media. It said that the BBC's priority should be on improving the quality of existing services - such as providing better quality regional TV news programmes.
