ITV and five are unlikely to survive as standalone companies in the long term, Greg Dyke, the former director-general of the BBC, says. In an interview with the financial publisher Cantos, Dyke said there was an opportunity for a company to rival ntl by combining separate TV companies in different countries. "It's unlikely that small players (and ITV is now comparatively a small player) can survive on their own," he said.
