The Week: Media news - GCap handed record fine

Ofcom has fined GCap Media £1.1 million for its "Secret Sound" listener competition, the largest ever fine the regulator has levied on the radio industry.

The competition, which ran in January 2007, asked users to identify a sound, but deliberately broadcast contestants with incorrect answers to stop the prize from being won too soon. The size of the fine reflected the fact that GCap originally referred to the incident as a "system error", which Ofcom said was misleading, and also only published its offer to refund contestants on its corporate website.
