The Week: Media News - Ofcom stands by BBC fine

Ofcom has defended its decision to fine the BBC £50,000 after the children's programme Blue Peter faked a winner of a phone-in competition. The fine is the first ever imposed on the BBC by a regulator and will be paid from licence fee money. Ofcom said the fine could have been as much as £250,000, and was levied because, in its view, the incident would not have been acted on by the BBC had it not received a complaint from a member of public.
