The Week: Media news - Tories want split licence fee

A Tory government would split the television licence fee between the BBC and other broadcasters to encourage diversity in programme genres.

The Shadow Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said that although the BBC would still receive the bulk of funds, other broadcasters would be entitled to apply for money. In a paper, the party added that "(broadcasters) should only be able to bid for licence-fee money in specific areas where plurality of provision is lacking".
