The World: El Segundo - Mattel awards $500m global media to Carat

Mattel, the toy manufacturer best known as the maker of Barbie dolls, has awarded Carat its global media planning account, as well as the majority of its media buying.

Sources suggest the annual spend on the business is $500 million.

WPP's MindShare, which was the incumbent on the account, is expected to retain media buying for the US TV portion of the business, which last year was supported by a $220 million budget.

Mattel was recently hit by recalls of its toys made in China amid concerns about potentially toxic materials used in the manufacturing process.
