The World: Geneva - WHO calls for global ban on cigarette advertising

The World Health Organization has called for a worldwide ban on cigarette advertising. It claims the ban is needed as tobacco companies continue targeting young people.

The call follows the results of a WHO survey of 13- to 15-year-olds in schools around the world. It found that more than 55 per cent of them had seen billboard cigarette ads during the previous month, while 20 per cent owned an item with a cigarette brand logo on it.

Dr Margaret Chan, the WHO director-general, said: "A ban on all tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship is a powerful tool we can use to protect the world's youth."
