The World: Madrid - Metro International shuts down Spanish operation

Metro International has shut down its operations in Spain.

The Spanish Metro, which had 1.8 million daily readers, published its final issue on 29 January after increased competition and a declining advertising market had led to losses.

The newspaper had been in operation for eight years, and was published in seven cities in the country.

Per Mikael Jensen, the chief executive and president of Metro International, said: "A continued investment in Spain cannot be justified at this point and we are therefore focusing our resources on growth areas where we can create long-term shareholder value."
