The World: Moscow - RTL to take 49 per cent stake in Russia's Ren TV

The RTL Group, part of the Bertelsmann media empire, is set to buy a 49 per cent share of Ren TV, the Russian TV channel, for 100 million.

The TV provider, which had a turnover of 77 million in 2004, has a 7.5 per cent share of the Russian television advertising market and is available in 725 regions.

Bertelsmann, which reported profits of 4.9 billion in 2004, already owns 31 television companies across Europe and Asia including Germany's RTL, France's M6 and Britain's five. The purchase of Ren TV marks its first foray into the Russian market.
