The World: Shanghai - French supermarket pre-empts Chinese boycott

Carrefour, the French supermarket chain, has launched an ad campaign in China in an effort to head off a possible consumer boycott of French goods.

Momentum for a boycott has been gathering pace after the fierce protests that occurred when the Olympic torch passed through Paris.

Carrefour is working with MindShare China to run newspaper ads that highlight its social and commercial efforts in the country since 2001.

The ads quote Jose-Luis Duran, Carrefour's chief executive, as saying that the group has never given direct or indirect assistance to any political or religious organization whether in China or outside it and will not do so in future.
