The World: Washington - US government to sue News Corp over reality TV

The US government is suing News Corporation for alleged violations of the country's indecency laws in an episode of the defunct reality programme Married by America.

The Department of Justice opted to take action even though body parts shown during strippers' performances were electronically obscured.

However, the department claims the episode, screened in April 2003, was "pandering, titillating and shocking".

The lawsuits seek to enforce the Federal Communications Commission's $56,000 in fines for airing the episode.

Fox said it was happy for the case to go to court so it could present "the full and factual legal arguments".
