WPP Group acquires Gowers Advertising

- WPP Group has acquired London based Gowers Advertising, a specialist healthcare advertising agency, for an undisclosed sum.

Gowers will join WPP CommonHealth, which is the world's largest healthcare communications network.

Under the terms of the deal, Gowers' founder and managing director, Barry Gowers, will remain as agency head. The agency's structure and staff will also remains in place. In addition, Gowers will become part of the CommonHealth management committee.

Founded in 1988, Gowers Advertising has an international roster of mostly Europe-based healthcare clients, including Knoll Pharmaceuticals, Nestle Clinical Nutrition, Glaxo-Wellcome and Fujisawa & Napp Laboratories.

The agency reported billings of £11.4 million ($18.6 million) in 1997 and has 18 full-time employees.

Within the last year, CommonHealth has added units in Paris, Tokyo, Beijing and its home base of New Jersey, where much of the pharmaceutical industry in the US is based.
