Student teams win top D&AD prize with mobile app and book design

LONDON - Two student teams have tied in first place to win D&AD's prestigious Student of the Year honour at last night's ceremony in London.

Petra Muda and Harri Leppala, from Berghs School of Communication in Sweden, created a mobile application called "find it", which enables fans of eBay to send a photo to the site of an item they want to buy and then receive a reply with the best match.

The other winner, Micheline Mannion, from Central St Martins College of Art and Design, designed a book cover for publisher Faber and Faber, incorporating its new Print on Demand (PoD) service.

The Student Awards uncovers new talent in advertising and design with only the most innovative work being awarded top prize.

Greg Quinton, the D&AD education chairman said: "When I see a great idea for the first time, my brain asks a whole series of questions: 'Is it original?' 'Is it even possible?' 'Is it the right solution for the brief and client?' If the answer is ‘yes’ then that’s the first part of what I call ‘the wow moment’."

The D&AD Student of the Year judging panel enjoyed the "wow moment" not once, but twice this year.

All entries, including the 18 first prizes and 36 second prizes can be viewed at: www.dandad.org/studentawards09.
