Barclaycard has been forced to pay several million pounds in compensation to chief executive Antony Jenkins, after he had not received a promotion that had been promised.

Apple is coming under scrutiny from regulators after it refused to allow a mobile application created by Google to feature on its iPhone. The US Federal Communications Commission has written to the company raising concerns that it may be carrying out monopolistic practices.

Smartphones such as the Blackberry and the iPhone will account for 70 per cent of phones sold by 2012, mobile-phone experts have predicted. Currently, the phones have accounted for less than three in ten of the mobiles sold in Europe so far this year.

Diageo is suing Sainsbury's over alleged copyright infringement of its Pimm's brand. The global spirits company has accused the supermarket of infringing its intellectual property rights after it launched a gin-based summer cocktail drink Pitchers in April.

Supermarket own-label products have experienced a rise in sales after as consumers rein in their spending during the recession. A new report has found that 41 per cent of grocery sales last month were own-label products, an increase from 38.2 per cent in 2008.

The Labour Party has appointed Kerry McCarthy, MP for Bristol East, as its first "Twitter tsar" in an effort to encourage other MPs to use new media ahead of the next election. McCarthy currently has more than 1,600 followers on Twitter.
