PiL will play five dates next month, the first time the band has played together in 17 years.

And Lydon attacked people who accused the former Sex Pistols frontman of selling out by his appearance in the Country Life ad.

He told the Camden New Journal: "Why are they questioning me? What manual am I supposed to adopt?

"I’m promoting a British product which I’m very proud of. Anything I can do to help British industry is fine by me and in return you’ve got PiL."

He said the money he received for the ad funded the advance for the PiL tour.

The Country Life campaign was created by Grey London and featured TV and print executions.

Accusations that Lydon had sold out by appearing in the campaign came four years after the former hellraiser appeared in ITV's I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.

I've mentioned before that 'Celebrity Sell-Out' is a misnomer. It's actually 'Celebrity Sell-In'. I've never understood why anyone involved in marketing would get on a moral high horse and say that a celebrity who has worked hard to make a name for themselves would not want to earn something from that. Isn't that what marketing and branding is all about? Well said, John Lydon.

Agree wholeheartedly Mark! It's crazy for a publication that supposedly supports our industry to suggest that endorsements and partnerships are negative. Without these, much of the industry would not exist and there would not be much need for many of Haymarket's titles.

Agreed.

I wish he had simply said 'I did it for the money', rather than saying that it was to fund his band's reunion. Nothing wrong with that - he's got to earn just like the rest of us.
