What have you been proudest of this year?

Rattling Stick has continued to create fantastic work and live up to its ideal of fairness, craft, good humour and quality. Also, I've lost a stone.

And what's been your biggest disappointment?

I didn't lose two stones.

When was the last time you surprised yourself?

An ancient and flabby-looking version of myself laid in wait in the mirror – he jumped out at me only this morning.

If you could change one thing about the industry at the moment, what would it be (and why)?

I'd like to see a return to trust in the auteur and a move away from decision by testing. Perhaps it's a cliché from a director but creative ideas told by committee that take on board absolutely everyone's concerns and aspirations are unlikely to be very good. To make everything acceptable to everyone is a route to magnolia. Pissing the odd person off is a fair price to pay for creating something that will grab you, even if it might be grabbing some people in an uncomfortable place.

How do you get your creative juices flowing?

I listen to Scarlatti – it's been proved that it greases the synapses.

You're planning a fun night out. Who from the industry would be your (fantasy) playmates (and why)?

Johnnie Frankel chooses the wine. Vilmos Zsigmond provides the stories. Matthew Saunby adds the unpredictable.

The internet has been banned. What do you miss most (and why)?

Access to obscure music – discovering music and artists that I have never heard of has given me a lot of pleasure.

What's the last Google search you did?

Tits. I looked out of the window and couldn't decide if the small bird on the feeder was a marsh or a willow tit – they are very similar. Really you need to hear their song to differentiate. I have an eye for great tits – I can spot those very easily.

The robots are coming. What would you get yours to do for you?

Write treatments.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An adult. Being a child at school in the 60s was frustrating and at times painful if you got whacked, which I did.

All the world's culture (art, music, literature etc) is about to be destroyed. What one thing would you save (and why)?

An original recording of Little Richard singing Tutti Frutti. Surely you don't have to ask why.

I'm still here because…

I haven't decided to leave just yet.

The lowdown:

To the surprise of no-one, Daniel Kleinman was picked as one of the standouts from a quarter-century of the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase at Cannes this year. The Rattling Stick co-founder also worked on one of the year’s biggest movies – creating the title sequence for Spectre. Kleinman has directed the titles for seven of the past eight Bond films (missing only Quantum Of Solace). Among Kleinman’s achievements in 2015 was securing the considerable talents of Traktor for Rattling Stick, and the man was even given one of the most high-profile commercial directing jobs of the year when he was asked to shoot Tesco’s return to TV advertising.
