Bye-bye the decade with no name. What are you relieved to draw a line under?

TBH I don't feel I am saying goodbye to much – the whole unsavory lot are coming with me: Trump, Putin, Brexit, self-serving political and business leaders, despots, kleptocrats, extreme-right muppet heads, economic decline, climate change, conmen, pervs, etcetera, frickin' etcetera.

What’s your biggest hope for the decade ahead?

Less of the above. Not getting hopes up.

And what’s top of your professional to-do list for the 2020s?

To create at least one unicorn. And I don't mean "cute white horse with pointy bit". That'd be impossible. And they don't exist. Sorry Carla.

You have to job swap with someone in our industry for one month. Who would it be with and why?

John Hegarty; the Clint Eastwood of advertising.

Who is your best friend in the industry and why?

Trev. When you've been in the "trenches" together...

What do you think the Friday feeling is?

Every day is a Friday to me. Not necessarily the blessing it sounds; because I don't get many work-free weekends and I have to entertain in the evenings a lot. Boo hoo me.

Who or what would you put into room 101 and why?

Trump. Brexiteers. Fascists. Racists. Sexists. If you need an explanation as to why, you are one of them.

If you could uninvent one piece of technology, what would you choose and why?

Petrol-burning vehicles. Did you know that the technology exists to power vehicles with water? So why do we continue allowing petrol to call the shots??

In the spirit of embracing failure… What has been your biggest screw-up?

I had a company I helped name, shape, fund – that went gang-busters and relocated to Silicon Valley – only to have it catastrophically fail thanks to the people who ran the company. My screw-up was in not spotting the prospect of their actions. You'd think I'd have learned by now.

What do you do to stay match fit?

Try to stay as close to the leading edge as I have the capacity to, and have the courage to lead the conversation occasionally. And never stop.

What would be your darts walk-on music and why?

Rastaman Vibration by Bob Marley. "Live if you want to live. That's what we got to give! Got to have a good vibe! Wo-wo-ooh!" That, and possibly the Marche Funèbre by Chopin – I'm a terrible darts player.
