Bye-bye the decade with no name. What are you relieved to draw a line under?

The complete imbalance of the media mix and the inaccuracies of the claims made by some media; the forgetfulness of those that are responsible for brand and the intangible assets that create shareholder value; the relentless shift to performance that undermines.

What’s your biggest hope for the decade ahead?

I look forward to the realisation that brands matter when they make emotional (not rational) connections with consumers and that newsbrands do that better than anyone else. The power of contextualised communication in delivering performance and brand, delivered through an engaging media.

And what’s top of your professional to-do list for the 2020s?

Save the marketing landscape and build trust into what we all do by setting better standards for the industry that reward and delight the consumer, raise the value of journalism and bring more diversity.

You have to job swap with someone in our industry for one month. Who would it be with and why?

Not interested, I already have the best job.

Who is your best friend in the industry and why?

I have lots of friends in the industry and they have one thing in common, they have integrity.

What do you think the Friday feeling is?

A sense of achievement and time for the family.

Who or what would you put into room 101 and why?

A US dictionary because Americanisms are ruining the English language. "From the get go" – what?

If you could uninvent one piece of technology, what would you choose and why?

The microwave. I like the creativity and patience required to cook.

In the spirit of embracing failure… What has been your biggest screw-up?

Realising late in my career that there is a life outside.

What do you do to stay match fit?

Build a team around me of more competent people.

What would be your darts walk-on music and why?

Dead Kennedys' Too Drunk to F**k. Because it appears that's what you need to be to play darts
