Bye-bye the decade with no name. What are you relieved to draw a line under?

The global climate crisis. Thank god we finally acknowledged it as the extinction emergency it is and sorted it quickly.

What’s your biggest hope for the decade ahead?

Retirement before the decade is out.

And what’s top of your professional to-do list for the 2020s?

Retirement before the decade is out.

You have to job swap with someone in our industry for one month. Who would it be with and why?

Anyone just starting out or starting up, because it's a lot of fun. I might want to swap for more than a month, though.

Who is your best friend in the industry and why?

This industry is full of brilliant and lovely people and I've been fortunate to pick up many good friends – and a life partner – along the way. However, Mark Holden is probably the oldest, and the one with the most fragile ego, so I'd better say him.

What do you think the Friday feeling is?

Sadly, the warming glow of a log fire, pizza and a delicious Primitivo (after work).

Who or what would you put into room 101 and why?

The Palace of Westminster. It's a spent force that has largely served its purpose.

If you could uninvent one piece of technology, what would you choose and why?

Email. The scourge of modern (business) communications technology and a horrible sponge of time and productivity.

In the spirit of embracing failure… What has been your biggest screw-up?

I don't think I've screwed up particularly badly. It's just everyone around me seems to succeed that bit more.

What do you do to stay match fit?

I wouldn't say match fit, more glacially slow improvements in physical and mental health, but I started running about nine months ago. Those that know me will know what a drastic lifestyle change this represents.

What would be your darts walk-on music and why?

Blind by Talking Heads. Because the audience might be more forgiving of my wayward arrows if they thought it true of me.
