ABC FIGURES: Consoles lead computer sector

Future's Official PlayStation 2 magazine cemented its success this year with a continued rise in sales. Year-on-year sales rose 137 per cent, giving the magazine an ABC of 195,293, highlighting the importance of new technology to the sector.

Its success also meant continued fallout from rival titles in the sector - now dominated by gaming magazines - with last period's biggest loser, Future's Official PlayStation magazine, taking a further tumble with a 44 per cent decline in sales. Nintendo Official magazine's decline - 23.6 per cent to 42,014 - showed the dominance of the PlayStation brand in the minds of consumers.

Magazines focusing on the PC purchasing and business sector continued to suffer at the expense of the gaming titles, with Dennis' PC Pro and Computer Shopper falling further after last year's decline. PC Pro dropped 6.4 per cent, with Computer Shopper slipping 8.6 per cent year on year.

Computeractive, however, kept its top spot in the sector, with the ABC total of 278,570.

PlayStation World, from the Computec stable, had a steady six months, rising 2.1 per cent to report a new ABC of 89,273, with GamesMaster, published by Future, also enjoying a growth of 30.8 per cent over the last year and a new ABC of 58,656.

VERDICT: Sales in console titles will continue to increase alongside innovation in the gaming sector.
