Tim Jennings, head of day-to-day sales at the Daily Mail, nominates
David Proctor, formerly ad manager on the Hertfordshire Advertiser.
’I went to work for David as a display sales executive at Home Counties
Newspapers in 1976. We used to go out on sales calls and he would
whistle a lot and come out with an array of northern phrases that meant
nothing to me. But he was a true sales pro. There was no object he
couldn’t overcome and no sale he couldn’t close.
’If a client complained about lack of response to an ad, he would sell
him a bigger one or increase the frequency. ’It’s an easy job this,
young Tim,’ he would say, then carry on with his whistling.
’If you read this, David, please get in touch.’
