HOW TO GET AHEAD: WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WORK FOR ... BBC WORLDWIDE - It may be in the arse-end of London but at least you can escape in your MX- 5

Good location? No. Despite being named ’Woodlands,’ BBC Worldwide’s HQ

is slap-bang in the middle of White City. ’The arse-end of London,’ is

how Matt Teeman, Radio Times deputy display manager, describes it. ’If I

look out of my window, I can see the A40 and the cab fares into Soho are

a bit of an office joke.’

Inside it’s better, if a little cosy, but the facilities make up for a

lack of space. Woodlands boasts a modern gym, a sports hall with a five-

a-side footie pitch, three squash courts and, more importantly, its own

well-stocked bar. All this plus a subsidised canteen and four sandwich

bars.

What’s it like? ’There’s a good lively atmosphere,’ says Teeman, one of

30 sales staff who shares the first floor with ad teams from BBC

Wildlife, Top of the Pops, Live & Kicking and the children’s titles.

’It’s a big enough company to have some clout but small enough for

everyone to know each other.’ The gardening, food magazines and ’SMEG’

(that’s the Sports, Men’s and Entertainment Group) live on the ground

floor.

What about perks? Everyone gets 26 days holiday a year and most Radio

Times sales staff get a mobile phone and company car. ’Most people have

MX-5s,’ Teeman says.

How does it recruit? Classifed juniors are hired straight from college

and display executives are recruited largely from other magazines. All

positions are advertised internally first.

Is it good at training? ’There are lots of courses run internally and by

external training consultancies,’ says personnel officer Karen

Wagman.

’We also have our own employee development department.’
